It is with great sadness that we have received the news that Sir Nicholas Wall, formerly President of the Family Division, has died aged only 71 years old.

Sir Nicholas was a compassionate judge who thought and cared deeply about the outcome of his cases.

He was called to the Bar in 1969, appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988, a recorder in 1990 and then a Judge of the High Court Family Division in April 1993. After a spell at the Employment Appeal Tribunal, and then the Administrative Court, he was promoted to the Court of Appeal in January 2004.

In April 2010 he was appointed President of the Family Division but was obliged to retire on health grounds in December 2012. Sadly he continued to struggle with ill health since then.

We send our sincere condolences to Sir Nicholas’ widow and family and to his many friends at this sad time.
